Honolulu's Chinatown has been dramatically transformed over the course of time. This area drew Polynesian settlers and laborers were imported from China. Ever since then Chinatown has grown and today, it remains a location of historic culture that attracts tourists and locals.
I wanted to discover what the future of Chinatown was going to look like and keep in tact the traditional qualities of Chinese culture. Chinese patterning, dishes and festivities are a few of the inspirations behind the identity. The Chinese Ribbon Dance was one of my main inspirations. The artistic movements of the ribbon is usually accompanied by the fast and slow tempos of the music. Chinatown reminds me of this ribbon dance due the constant movement and influx of travelers and locals passing through or staying.
